When towing or hauling things in the bed it determines the maximum load that can be safely carried. For towing you need to consider the tongue weight of the trailer as well as passengers and gear. There is nothing you can do to legally adjust the payload, but it doesn't mean that you can't make it tow or haul better. Payload is usually measured for one configuration of a vehicle then it is just a math problem for a given weight of a build. There are a lot of considerations (both legal and practical) that a manufacture goes through when setting payload.Excuse my ignorance, but why is payload such a huge topic?
